Rock, Ice and Tropical Beaches
(Mt Kenya, Pemba and Zanzibar)

Mt Kenya from space! (from National Geographic's book Orbit.) (no enlargement)

Around the middle of the year either Gavin or Richard mentioned to me that more than 20 peaple were interested in our Mt Kenya plans. I laughed, and said there's no way we'll get more than 10 half way up Africa, there's always a lot of maybes early on... But the cynic was proved wrong, and 26 people got their acts together and came up to Kenya in December 1999.

This is essentially my slide show on the trip, converted from celluliod-and-tungsten to html-and-jpeg for a wider audiece. Click any image for a nice big version, maybe with juicy comments.

The Beginning...

About a third of our group flew up to Nairobi, where we met those who went up overland and then dashed off to Mt Kenya, the main objective.

The porters left us at Shipton's camp, we ferried food and then moved to Austrian hut, while the walkers went off on a leasurly circuit of the peaks.

Sidetrack to American Camp

Leaving two big parties to climb first, Lisa and I wandered around to American camp, hoping to climb Pt John Couloir, which was melted. We reconciled ourdelves with lots of chocolate and a few scary piches on the Tyndall glacier.
