East Africa

December 1999 - March 2000

In the beginning there was a two-part plan: climb Mt Kenya, then find a beach to welcome the new millenium.

I got carried away, and went on to Ethiopia alone before making my way home after 3 months.

East Africa in the round

In Words

I've finished writing up Vultures, Dogs and Sheep, about walking in the Simien Mountains, but nothing about the rest of the trip.

and on day 2, we hired a horse. Walking in the Simiens.

There is also a page of Practical Details with a few tips, links and books.

The Slide Show

concentrates on Ethiopia, as most of the original audience (in May 2000) had seen other people's Mt Kenya pictures.

ArchwayRock, Ice and Tropical Beaches - Mt Kenya, Pemba and Zanzibar with a large group. [parts 1, 2, 3]

Busses, Waterfalls and Castles - The begining of my quick trip around Ethiopia, featuring the Blue Nile, Lake Tana, Gonder and 4 days of bus rides. [parts 4, 5]

Vultures, Dogs and Sheep - 9 days' walking in the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia. Now with words, in the story at left. [parts 6, 7, 8]

Inside one of the churches at Lalibela

Carved from the Solid - The unbelievable rock churches at Lalibela, 800 years old and still in daily use. [parts 9, 10]

Going Home - Overland from Nairobi to Johannesburg in a bit of a hurry, pausing in Dar es Salaam and Northern Malawi.

Note: clicking small pictures enlarges them, clicking the enlargement then takes you to the next one.

I should probably also mention that this is the first thing I ever put on the web. So it'a a little, umm, rustic.
